Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea is a stunning debut that will leave the reading breathless and begging for more of April Genevieve Tucholke's seemingly magical, mysterious and downright haunting writing. The way she writes has an eerie and timeless feel that will leave the reader enchanted and undoubtedly finding themselves entwined with River and Violet's tale.

This is the most anticipated book of 2013. Don't deny it. Everyone wants it and you're worried it won't live up to the hype. The way she writes has an eerie and timeless feel that will leave the reader enchanted and undoubtedly finding themselves entwined with River and Violet's tale.

This is the most anticipated book of 2013. Don't deny it. Everyone wants it and you're worried it won't live up to the hype. Well, I'm here to squash those pesky worries of yours like bugs. The way April writes makes the words float off the page. Her style automatically, and I mean right off the bat, gives you the shivers and transports you into Violet's sleepy world. As the reader, you are plunged into a small town with a small town feel.

Violet and her brother's artistic parents take off for Europe to pursue a colorful passion, leaving them at their late grandmother's estate to fend for themselves. They've gone broke. More like four leaps past broke. Violet decides to rent out the guesthouse (I told you it was an estate) for more income and just a little while later the utterly handsome and insanely mysterious River comes to stay. River's a compulsive liar. I'm pretty sure everything that comes out of his mouth is his interpretation on a much more normal life. Well, okay, he did tell the truth about a few things. But the majority, come on people. Of course, will this handsome liar comes a secret and deep as the ocean itself and nearly as dangerous.

River is really a extremely complex character. As I've previously stated, he compulsively lies. Not only that but the power inside of him is eating at him. There has been no one before Violet so he has no idea what to do with himself. Yes, he is falling for her...or is he? You really can't tell with his excessive mood changes and strange powers of persuasion. I think he is. But you'll have to decide for yourself when you read the book.

Honestly, he's passionate and strange and deadly and beautiful. That's what makes River River. His need to be the justice that strikes you down or holds you up defines him. It's who he is. His need to save the good and punish the evil isn't going to change, but if the power continues to consume him and lead him toward the path of insanity, there will be nothing let and even the one person who owns his heart won't be able to save him.

Now as for Violet, she is just so awesome. Heck, she loved the story A Rose For Emily and that things is as creepy as hell. Those of you who've read it know exactly what I'm talking about. But she found it to be the definition of true love. She drinks coffee on her toes, wears old clothes and is simply her. She doesn't care what people think about her and she just simply is. When River reveals his secret to her she wants to hate him but just can't bring herself to.

She had already fallen too far.

Through everything, all the lies and as she unfold his tale, releasing his demons and falling deeper into his tangled web, she wants to save him from himself. With him, she find secrets about her grandmother's past that have everything to do with what's happening. History has a talent for repeating itself.

The climax was like wow. Yup. I can't say much about that except I'll be looking over my shoulder for a while.

Also, I know I should hate the ending (and I love who's in the guesthouse by the way. Violet can have River, I want him) but I love it. Why? You'll just have to read it for yourself.

I picked this up as part of my 2014 Rewind Challenge - it’s a book I’ve had on my shelf for a while that I’d really been looking forward to. Violet and her brother Luke – who seems strangely antagonistic – are living alone in the small seaside town of Echo while their parents are in Europe for the summer.

I was immediately drawn to this because of the cover. I hadn't even read the synopsis yet when I added it to my TBR. Finally I took the time to read the synopsis and I fell in love. This became one of my most anticipated reads of 2013 and let me tell you, I was not the least bit disappointed.
First things first... The writing in this book is absolutely gorgeous! It was so good I was invested from the very beginning. I saw a couple of people saying they thought that the beginning didn't have mu I was immediately drawn to this because of the cover. I hadn't even read the synopsis yet when I added it to my TBR. Finally I took the time to read the synopsis and I fell in love. This became one of my most anticipated reads of 2013 and let me tell you, I was not the least bit disappointed.
First things first... The writing in this book is absolutely gorgeous! It was so good I was invested from the very beginning. I saw a couple of people saying they thought that the beginning didn't have much going on, but really I couldn't tell. I was so into the writing that I didn't know that it wasn't much going on lol In my mind though, everything was just fine. I enjoyed getting Violet's back story and then meeting River. I really wanted to quote this whole book, but for obvious reasons I couldn't.

Next is the romance. I figured it wouldn't be all that great since it was a paranormal romance and for a while things were sketchy where he was concerned, but in the end I really fell in love with him. It was obvious that he felt something for Violet and that he was very serious where she was concerned. Pair this with the writing, and this romance was definitely one for the books.
"And I prayed [...] about the Devil. I asked her to keep my hand out of his. I asked her to keep me safe from evil."

I also loved the paranormal ability that River had. It was nothing like I had ever read before. And of course, that freaked me out. It was also unexpected. When it was finally revealed, I found myself having to go back and read the part that explained it all over again. Especially when things started to pile up. I just couldn't picture him doing those things. So I thought I had the mystery all put together when the next person turned up. But that was blown completely out the window too. This was my favorite part of the book. The mystery will blow your mind. I'm one of those people that will always be like "I solved it!" as soon as I'm done reading it and I find out I did. But with this one, I got it wrong. And I loved that. It meant that it wasn't too predictable.

This is one of those books where as soon as you read the first page you know whether or not you're going to like it. And this did exactly that for me. Expect as soon as I read page one, I knew it would be one of my favorites of 2013. You guys, I didn't believe this was a real debut! It's just that good! This book was the furthest thing from scary. I mean seriously. Not. Scary.

Pretty boring. And the only character I actually liked was a minor character that was a small child. The other characters I found unrealistic, idiotic, and elitist.

"I can't get a job. I come from old money you have to run through it all and then drink yourself to death in a gutter. Getting a job isn't allowed."
