One of the problems I had with this book was the implication that women need to be protected by men. Specifically, in this book, a 10 year old boy "is counted on" to take care of his mother and 15 year old sister. Really? How is a boy that young supposed to care for them? Can't they take care of themselves, being way older than he is? And there is the other boy, 17 years old, who they meet on their 'travels'. He is also an implied protector of women. Before I read this book, I had never heard of the Lithuanian deportation, as probably most people haven't. Between Shades of Gray is really, really good because the characters feel real and so you learn about a really horrid time through the eyes of characters that you can empathize with. The plot is good and the descriptions even better. The author didn't sugarcoat the whole story at all, and that is why I really liked this book. Recommended for history buffs who want to read somethin

Just finished this book, to sum up my thoughts I flat just didn't like the book. Although I loved Ruta Sepstys twist with realistic fiction in Out of the Easy, I didn't like this twist.
