I've always preached that one should read the book first, then watch the movie. This time was an exception. If you are one of the few people on GR who has not yet read this book (I've never seen so many reviews!), see the movie first. Much better not knowing what is going to happen. Well done film. Then read the book for the details left out. I am not into graphic violence, but couldn't put the book down. Collins writes well, and creates mostly strong characters. I enjoyed The Hunger Games quite a bit. I'd give it a 3.5, but that's not an option.
The story was well done I think. I did have a problem or two the story overall. One being with the characters. They all seems just a bit flat to me. Even telling the story from 1st person didn't stop the flat feeling of it all. But, I really enjoyed the telling of Katniss' relationship to Rue. That felt honest and powerful, like it came directly from Mrs. Collins' heart.

Great for a quick read! Lots of action.
