At the core, this is a simple morality tale. An examination of what is it to be selfish or to be giving, and what It means if you are naturally inclined toward one proclivity or the other.
Surrounding that compelling yarn is a classic Discworld story involving familiar fantasy character types and creatures, in often unfamiliar ways.
