This is a retrospective review, but even when I first read this book some 15 years ago, it seemed rather dated. Yes, I know it's a historical novel! But that's not the datedness I mean. It suffers in the way of so many 21st century historicals, in that the author fictionalises the female protagonist, here the eponymous Katherine Swynford, based on the social mores of the period in which it was written.
