This story doesn't lend itself to simple interpretations. It is told from the viewpoint of Richard Papen, remembering his time at college when his friend Bunny died. Richard transfers to Hampden College in Vermont in his junior year and enrolls in the tiny Classics department to study Greek with legendary teacher Julian Morrow.
