I'll probably revise this later but for now, I will just say that the back cover of my edition of this book calls it "The Strangest Love Story Ever Told" and I have to concur. It is weird, creepy and frankly, not really a love story. It is more of a ghost story, or a tale of revenge and how it can destroy a person's soul. I've just finished reading this book for the (5th?) time. I find it incredible that some call this a love story. I believe it to be better described as a strange mix of psychlogically romanticized horror. I found Heathcliff,at first, to be a character to be pitied; his vindictive endeavors serve to transform my compassion into disgusted reversion.I enjoy Ms. Bronte's gift for twisting the human emotions, and for drawing attention to both the beauty and repugnance of romantic obsession. ...more
