I'm a great lover of Agatha Christie, and I can admit that this isn't her best book: the writing was somewhat draggy, and our narrator Hastings is quite dense. However the final twist and the reveal of the murderer were amazing, it really does all detective novels honor. Agatha Christie has that style - her plotlines are intricate and tangled, but she keeps the things simple in their essence, and once the murderer is unmasked you wonder why you hadn't seen it coming yourself because it's such a ...more

This first murder to be solved by Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot is Agatha Christie's first published book and a solid mystery that kept me guessing until the end. In true Christie fashion, readers spend 200 pages sifting through clues and Poirot's cryptic remarks until, in the last few pages, he dramatically reveals all in front of an audience of suspects.
