You get the idea here, right? The pilot must choose between saving his family or saving every person on his plane. That’s all I’m going to tell you about that. So, I’ve been having astonishingly good luck with books this month! I really hope it continues! I am especially surprised that I read three thrillers in July that were 4-5 star reads for me. That never happens! And I am notoriously the odd one out with many of the most popular thrillers, but here we are…

I loved Falling.

I always feel nervous reading action thrillers. While the plot may interest me, I do feel like certain absurdities outweigh the tension created and that makes it all unenjoyable for me. TJ Newman eased my concerns from the very first page and continuously proved herself as an exceptional storyteller. This was clearly well thought out with believable dialogue and characters. In fact, even the premise, although over-the-top, was developed in a way that made it feel completely (and frighteningly) plausible.

I loved the way Newman developed her main characters and gave readers a brief but thorough glimpse into who they were outside of this ordeal. I also loved how she humanized the villain of the story. I think she could have easily made the culprit completely detestable, but that would have been such a different story. She does play on the readers’ sympathy and she teaches us something very valuable in the end. I also felt she did well balancing a stereotype against some misguided prejudices. This is difficult to explain without spoiling things, but I think you’ll understand when you read it.

Falling never loses momentum, but it manages to be both a thrill and an emotional ride. I cried from sadness, but also in celebratory ways as I witnessed sacrifices and heroics.

Meticulously detailed, expertly plotted, and exceptionally written, Falling has definitely earned its slot on the bestseller list! I’m so glad someone saw the potential in this debut and brought TJ Newman onto the scene. I know she experienced a lot of rejection with her manuscript, as she has spoken about it on social media and she wrote about it in her acknowledgments. I think she is an inspiration and I’m grateful I had the opportunity to read her incredible first novel. I’ve no doubt she is going to bring the reading world some more phenomenal stories in the future! ...more
