2021 Nebula Award for Best Novella nominee (winner TBD)

I feel a little guilty that I did not enjoy this book. The synopsis sounded like something that should have worked for me. It’s well-written and I appreciate that the author was trying to share stories from perspectives which are often unheard in the SFF literary space. Unfortunately, neither the plot nor the worldbuilding were enjoyable for me.

I think maybe I just had a hard time understanding the magic in this book. The writing is so lyrical and lovely though, and I was so happy to experience a story through the eyes of an older trans person. I want to read other works by this author to see if I'll enjoy them more when I can understand better what's actually happening. ...more

Adored the worldbuilding and the prose, and the idea of the story, but maybe not the execution??? Unsure, but Lemberg is definitely going on my auto-buy list!
