This was so different than I thought it was going to be. Very dark. Extremely graphic both with violence and intimacy. At times this was difficult to read. It dragged a little in the middle, though. But, the ending was so compelling and unexpected. Definitely had a major twist that I would never had guessed. Yes, 2 stars. Sue me.
If this is Mz Godwin's writing style then she is not the author for me.
I should have realized I wasn't gonna find this book all that fun since I pretty much hated 14 year old Bennet from chapter 1. Told myself, she will grow out of this surely, but nope.
The line "I was a pirate captain, a rebel queen of the sea, fighting against the conformities of society and the oppressive laws of man." like seriously? That's what has everyone swooning?!?

This story was a mixed bag for me. There were parts where I was so moved and pulled in and others where I wondered if the words or descriptions were just thrown in to reach a certain word count.
Overall, I liked each of these characters. I don't feel we really got to know Priest as well through his own actions, but by the end I still liked him.
I completely understand that this was a time when a lot of the things we take for granted were frowne ...more
