I am very impressed with this novel. It was heartbreakingly sad, but wasn't a caricature of sorrow. The characters were flawed and hopeful, contradictory souls described mirthlessly by a personification of Death.
I was predisposed to dismiss the narrator as a gimmick, but was pleasantly surprised by the way Zusak developed the character of Death. He was flat. He wasn't wisecracking ala Buster Poindexter in Scrooged or melodramatically grotesque like the ghost of Xmas future in that self-same mov ...more
