Honestly at first I gave Clockwork Angel 3/5, but the few last chapters of it saved this book one more point.

Clockwork Angel is about a girl named Tessa who life suddenly changed when her special talent was discovered while she was in London for her brother's calling. I want to make myself clear that I have mixed feeling about Tessa - our heroin, which there seems to be more disappointment than love because the ways she behaved sometimes were so childish and ignorant. You might say that she was still young/ it made her seem heroic, okay I honor your opinion. That's also why I like Jess more, she was at the same age as Tessa, bitchy but also very practical. Despite her talking that she hated Shadowhunters and everything, she saved Tessa 3 times!!!

Anyway there are so much more in this book to love and enjoy!

"Whatever you are physically, male or female, strong or weak, ill or healthy - all those things matter less than what your heart contains. If you have the soul of a warrior, you are the warrior. Whatever the color, the shape, the design of the shape that conceals it, the flame inside the lamp remains the same. You are that flame."

It teaches us about family bond: Tessa blind love for her brother, Will's protectiveness for Jem, Charlotte taking care of every child in the Institute, about human(or Shadowhunters') complexity such as Will's fake cruelty towards everyone and last but not least about the things define our nature.

Tessa has a special talent, but this talent makes her deeply doubt her own integrity. It strongly reminds me of "The metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka. When you are not the person you used to be, or even not a human at all, but your soul is still the same, will you be treated as before? Can you still love yourself, let alone other people? Although it may seem sophisticated, this question fits well in our modern life when so many young girls/boys change their appearance by cosmetic surgery with the hope that others will treat them better as well. Is that so?

I love Cassandre and I'll definitely keep on reading the next book in this series. Hope my perception for Tessa and Will will change over time.

Is it a bad thing if I say that I enjoyed this more than I enjoyed The Mortal Instruments?

Okay that's a big statement because let's face it The Mortal Instruments was just a special little something in the book world. But I was simply more intrigued in the storyline of Clockwork Angel than I was in e.g., City of Bones all the way through to City of Heavenly Fire. I thought the characters were more witty and relatable and the world building was more thorough than The Mortal Instruments.

I was initially reluctant to start this series because, I have heard so much about this series and Cassandra Clare is so hyped (now I know why). I finally decided to give it a try after my friend recommended for what I believe was the millionth time (she would have thrown the book on my face if it wasn't for the lockdown). Now I don't know how to thank her enough because this series seriously blew my mind and is one of my all-time favorites.

The story is set in 1878, London. Now I don't know how to thank her enough because this series seriously blew my mind and is one of my all-time favorites.

The story is set in 1878, London. Tessa Gray arrives at London from New York to live with her brother Nathaniel. As soon as she sets her foot on the docks of Southampton, she gets abducted by the Dark Sisters. The Dark Sisters keep her locked up in the Dark House and torture her to unravel her ability to shape-shift (which Tessa never knew she had in the first place), all to please someone they refer to as the 'Magister'. And when Will Herondale, a young, arrogant shadowhunter, stumbles upon the Dark House and recues Tessa, she is drawn into the supernatural underworld of London.

The writing is easy to understand but at the same time immersive. The world-building is great, giving just the right vibes for Victorian London. I started the Shadowhunter Chronicles directly with this book instead of reading TMI first but I still had no trouble understanding the shadowhunter universe. The plot twist is good. The characters were good too: Will is painstakingly arrogant (we get to know the reason in the later books) to everyone except Jem , Tessa is a sensible but lost girl with some hidden fire, and Jem. Ohmigod! I LOVE Jem sooo much! He is an ANGEL in disguise!!! (not literally, just metaphorically). And his story is soooo depressing....(break for shedding tears)....

Overall, this book is just the right blend of angsty drama, adventure and humor. I highly recommend this book. The last time I felt this good about a series was when I read Harry Potter (and that is the series which made me love reading more than my other hobbies). So that's definitely something. ...more

This book really made me want to read the whole shadowhunters chronicles no matter what anyone say THIS WORLD AND CHARACTERS ARE ADDICTIVE AS HELL!
Before my only fav characters were Magnus, Alec and Izzy (I only really watched the show and read red scrolled Magic) now I'm so obsessed with Jem he is my fav part and person about this book —my angel—❤ I like Will too (until that one moment at end, he went too far) I just think he needs to open up to somebody rather than doing around acting like he ...more
