Lucy Tonks (the invisible life of a reader)
I really liked this book. It was such a quick and fun read.

I really liked the characters. I loved Malik and Karina and I loved their relationship. When the book started I was afraid that the romance will be an insta-love, but luckily I was wrong. I really liked Tunde too, he actually was one of my favorite characters.

The plot was kinda slow in the beginning, but once it picked up the pace, I could not put the book down! The only things that I found disappointing was that I guest who Idir was an

The world and magic system in this book were very unique and interesting. Karina and Malik are both put in challenging positions and make interesting choices. I was rooting for both of the characters even through often times they were on opposite sides. The story was fast-paced and unpredictable. (view spoiler)

*sobs loudly* This was soooo amazing but do not read it yet people. I'm so desperate to read the next book but it doesn't even have a title yet! Save yourselves the absolute agony and wait until book two exists so you can read them back to back. Full review to come when I've recovered from my depths of despair. ...more

As far as I'm concerned, this book's biggest downfall is the fact I thought that Karina and Malik were both rather annoying characters, each in their own way. That being said, Malik was my favorite of the two characters. The romance between the two of them was also handled very poorly; especially given the whole insta-love nature of the whole thing, and Malik's young ...more

Don't get me wrong, I really, really liked this story, but there were a couple of things that dropped the rating for me, and we'll explore them!
First and foremost I want to say that I LOVE the West African folklore this story was drawn to. It certainly made the story unique--without it, I feel that this story would have been a little too like all the other YA fantasies.
The first and major thing I really didn't like was the 'romance'. I saw no chemistry between Karina and Malik, like, at
