All of the not-so-great reviews put me off from picking this up for a while, but I'm SO happy that I did because Rory Power came to impress with her first novel.

Yes, I finished the book.
No, I still don't know what the hell was going on.
This was just boring and pointless. The "tox" thing was confusing as fuck. The romance aspect was so random?? There was absolutely no chemistry between the characters and I just couldn't give a damn about them at all. The only one I found slightly interesting was Byatt and she, well, wasn't there for long lol.

A physical finished copy of this book was given to me by the UK publisher at YALC. Which I am very grateful for but damn another 2019 release that disappointed me.

I'm truly now wondering if I read the same book everybody else has read. It really sounds we read two completely different books. I honestly don't get why this book got such raving loving reviews. I'm truly now wondering if I read the same book everybody else has read. It really sounds we read two completely different books. I honestly don't get why this book got such raving loving reviews. Yes, I was enjoying this book in the beginning and yes, I thought it had a great build up but everything after that was just horseshit. Like seriously where the hell was this book going? What was the whole freaking point of this novel? Don't ask me since I literally have no fucking clue. It just feels so pointless to me, like I waisted so much time reading this. My initial reaction after finishing this book was literally: what was the point of me reading this...?? I also have a pure hatred towards opening endings and this one just screams unanswered questions. I literally can't even remember if even one of my question was answered and I LITERALLY JUST FINISHED THIS BOOK. It also wasn't queer enough and the romantic pairing made zero sense to me. Like the book was trying to set Hetty up with Reese while Hetty was obviously in love with Byatt. She constantly thought of Byatt, mentioned Byatt, said Byatt completed her etcetera etcetera. I could understand Reese crush on Hetty but like Hetty wanting Reese too had me like ??? I even might go that far as saying that Hetty only returned Reese feelings because Byatt wasn't there. ALSO WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK WAS UP WITH THE USELESS REVEAL OF INFORMATION ABOUT BYATT WHICH I'M NOT EVEN GOING TO CONSIDER A PLOTTWIST BECAUSE IT WAS THAT STUPID, USELESS, POINTLESS. It was like so randomly thrown in there. To me it almost sounds like the author wanted to turn Byatt in an unreliable narrator/character but failed miserly. It was just randomly revealed, forgotten and nothing done or mentioned about it. I'm also still super pissed about the open ending. LIKE WTF HAPPENS NEXT, LIKE SERIOUSLY YOU JUST CAN'T END THE BOOK ON A RANDOM PAGE. I am almost thinking that the author realized she put herself in a too difficult spot and had herself no idea what to do next with the characters and the tox, so she just ended it there. Or it is like a money, cash grab and suddenly this book has turned into a duology or hell even a trilogy. I'm still just like WHAT WAS THE POINT. And so much of the story was kinda repetitive and I was always waiting for the build up or that something shocking or plottwisty or wild I DUNNO SOMETHING happened and when it did it just fell very flat and useless to me. This book had so much potential and I really liked the beginning but it sadly didn't fulfil its potential and went nowhere. Also this book is supposed to be very creepy, horrory and disgusting but it wasn't. I know I have a very different idea of what creepy is than most people but this was just some weird disease. I've seen my fair share of horror, thriller and slasher movies & read some of them but this ain't it. It truly doesn't have that atmosphere while it truly had the potential. I do have to say that I really liked the writing style of the author and that I really liked most of the characters with the exception of Byatt because I truly feel like Rory Powers had no idea what to do with her. My favorite character has to be Reese and I thought Hetty was pretty cool too and by the end I even liked Welch. I was really interested in where the story was gonna go and I did really like the beginning of this book but that's basically all of the positive things I can say about this novel. Hell I would say skip it & my sincere apologies to Eileen for gifting a copy of this book to you. This shows how much I enjoyed the beginning and that I had high hopes for Wilder Girls. Lol nu the end of the book those high hopes were brutally murdered, like crushed and violently stabbed to death. I would say if you want to read a story that has a premise like this just go read or watch annihilation. Like that is so much more worth it and is a beautifully shot movie and at least gives you some satisfaction and the creepy atmosphere. I'm just yelling one big no to wilder girls and I will be forever unsure if I reas the same book as everyone else. IT JUST DID NOTHING AND WENT NOWHERE.

This book was... interesting.

I don’t think I really even understand what I just read. The ending is written to explain the story, and I just found myself more confused. What is the “Tox” exactly and where did it come from? One may never know.

This book really wasn’t a genre I typically go for, but this book was getting a lot of hype so I figured I would try it. This just certifies that sci-fi is NOT for me.

Also, did anyone else get ‘The Walking Dead’ vibes from this story, or is that just me?
