What I thought of The Hate U Give: A pure master-piece, Angie Thomas doesn't right phony books filled with fluff, but books that are original and bring to light on-going problems and should not just be read- but, as Angie Thomas states:

I look as books as being a form of activism because a lot of the times they'll show us a side of the world that we may not have known

I started reading The Hate U Give last year, but the first 50 pages are a bit slow and I didn't feel myself into the story, so I procrastinated its reading. I took it again on February 5th and I read it in two days. I needed a book which could take me out of a big reading slump and so it did.

It wasn't bad. I mean, I liked the story. It's very recent and has a lot to do with people's lives. I think Thomas did a good job of showing that, and how people should really care about this issue since it's so controversial.

I also liked how the actual story was written, not just because it's something so many people talk about. I found Starr kind of annoying at the beginning, but she got a lot better at the end. I think it's worth reading books like that because then charact Actual Rating: 3.7

It wasn't bad. I mean, I liked the story. It's very recent and has a lot to do with people's lives. I think Thomas did a good job of showing that, and how people should really care about this issue since it's so controversial.

I also liked how the actual story was written, not just because it's something so many people talk about. I found Starr kind of annoying at the beginning, but she got a lot better at the end. I think it's worth reading books like that because then characters have a lot of room to grow throughout the book. If they start out perfect and amazing, it's nice and awesome, but you don't see the character changing and growing and developing as much. And later on in the book, there were some parts I didn't like because Starr was annoying me, but it's realistic that even though people change, they don't change completely. You can't have a character go from super annoying to great without having them slip up a few times along the way.

The other characters don't have as much development since this book was written in first person, but some of them did. Their change for the better throughout the book was nice. But again, since it was written in first person, I didn't really see some characters develop. They were pretty constant throughout. It's not a huge problem since we're seeing the world through Starr, but it's something that kind of bothered me a little.

I think one of the problems for me with this book was the writing style. It's not like the worst I've ever read, but something about it just didn't click with me. This isn't going to be everybody's opinion or reason for not giving five stars, but I just didn't really like it and it bored me a little at times. Especially since there was a constant switch off between intense and relaxed. Like, it started out pretty intense, then just relaxed and got kind of boring, then suddenly it was intense, then back to relaxed and casual, then intense again, relaxed again, and intense once more until the end. That kind of made it hard to read which is why I gave it four stars and not five.

I think that people should read this book to get a better understanding of this issue. It does a pretty good job of really telling how this issue affects people's lives. It's also a good book in general, so don't read it simply because you want to understand this issue. If it genuinely interests you, then read it. Don't force yourself to read it just because you feel like you should. There are other ways of educating yourself on this topic ...more

I can definitely see why this book was hyped up. It seemed like this was the most talked about book in all of 2017 with even John Green saying that it was stunning. Now having read it… a year later in 2018, and definitely behind on the hype, I can see why people loved it. It had this fast-paced storyline, this sense of community and theme of family surrounding the drama. The only major problem I had with it was the street slang that I occasionally got stuck on but other than that I found this an ...more
