Rating: "B": masterful writing and funny/clever satire, undermined by gross implausibilities and clunky auctorial manipulations. Distraction has a more mature, less headlong feel than Holy Fire, Sterling's previous novel. And the premise is grimmer -- the mid-21st century USA, bankrupted by a Chinese netwar, is coming seriously unglued.

Writing this review for future Deb as I plan to forget it as soon as possible (with my memory, it may not take long).
Sterling is a hit or miss author for me, which pains me to say, about an author which William Gibson likes so much, but there it is. This book is an abominable miss. It won lots of awards and I looked sone of them up: apparently, the Arthur C. Clark award (which this trip won in 2000 only requires the book to be sci-fi and first published in the UK for the first t ...more
