Now I want to re-watch the movie. 🧡💛

I remember reading and enjoying the Chrestomanci series by Diana Wynne Jones as a kid, so when I saw that Howl's Moving Castle is loved by so many readers and one of her more popular books, I decided to give it a go. Upon finishing it, I feel like I might have enjoyed it much more in my childhood, but it was still a fun read.
My favourite parts were probably grumpy Sophie and dramatic Howl :) I also really love the idea of the Howl's castle. That said, this book is properly crazy and at times, I ...more

My first experience with DWJ was her Chrestomanci series on a flight to Germany in the summer before 6th grade. I finished it in about 2 days (the first 2 books, since I had the combo book) and when I returned I purchased and devoured the other books.

This is a well-written fantastical middle grade book that will also appeal to adult readers because of how intelligent it is. I appreciated the novelty of the story and its imagination. I admired Sophie’s strength and laughed at Howe’s vanity and haphazardness. It could have been a 5 star for me, but the ending felt rushed and like it wanted to wrap everything up too quickly.

I'm very glad I watched the movie (many times) before finally getting around to reading the book. Howl's Moving Castle is my favorite Ghibli film. Had I read the book fordt, that might not have been the case! 😂
While there are definitely some differences, they're both amazing in their own right... But I do think I like the book just a little more. As per usual, there's so much more back story. I also feel like I've gotten to know the characters better, and appreciate them even more. Highly recomm ...more
