Interesting rather than fascinating, I enjoyed this book, even though it didn't have the level of detail I usually enjoy in a non-fiction book. But then as Sobel says, it's a popular account, and you have to accept it on those terms. Whilst the story is rather straightforwardly told, there is some lovely writing in it when Sobel indulges herself. A light read of a forgotten scientific problem. The text would have benefited from a photo of each of Harrison's devices, as well as those made by his competition. ...more
