This book didn't grab me right away. Though the first part of the book, dealt with a subject I am intensely interested in, leukemia, it began as a 3 star book. The history of the disease was interesting. As the author began to talk about the tactics used by the American Cancer Society and the like, I became more interested. But what made this book a 5 star book was the discussion about the war between big tobacco and science. That section alone made the book worth the read. In fact, I would like ...more

This was a well-written and concisely-explained history of the science and social interactions in the search to understand cancers. It deserves at least four stars for its execution of its historical and sociological accounts, but as the subtitle maintains that it is a "biography" of cancer, I'm have to deduct a star for its thinness on the biological mechanisms that cause a cell to rampantly and maladaptively divide.

I've read through the other reviews here on this book and don't know that I have much to add. If you have a basic grasp of biology, you will be able to follow along. The author explains the science very well. As much as this is a biography of cancer, it is also a history of medicine viewed through the lens of a particular disease. Highly readable. Leaves me with hope for the future of cancer management. ...more

If cancer is an ocean of information and chaos, Siddhartha is a flying dolphin having an almost perfect story-telling capability for explaining its depth!
