SUPER HARD TO RATE

Honestly, while I really loved this book, I also didn't love it if it makes sense. I loved the social commentary on cancel culture, SoMe and online bullying. But I also didn't love those themes because they just fed into all my fears about being online and putting myself out there in any capacity. And I loved June, how flawed and real she was. But I also didn't love her because of those flaws. In many ways this book was just way too real. And that was both scary and great.

On the plus side, the writing is spritely and its quick to read. But it was hard for me to tell what I was supposed to be taking seriously and what I wasn't. I'm still not sure. To begin with, the stolen book that becomes a huge bestseller is about conscripted Chinese workers during WW1? Really? That's the subject matter the Colleen Hoover crowd is going to snap up in a hurry. I take it we're supposed to sneer at the narrator, but the dead character whose book she purloins is equally dislikeable ...more

Scariest horror novel I've ever read. Completely terrified me out of wanting to be a published writer. 5 stars, loved it, more please. ...more

Liked it lots at the jump off, but liked it less as I read on.

This was a quick and fun read. Like the criticism I have with the other Kuang books I've read, I felt like this was a little heavy handed. Too blatant, too spelled out. June was interesting to read from, but we knew almost nothing about her. She was a vessel through which to tell this story, which was very entertaining. Things moved very quickly here, which made this very readable, but I didn't love the writing and though the story was interesting and there was a lot of commentary, nothing felt ...more

I read this book so fast. I could not put it down. Since I knew all about the Twitter drama and how writers get nasty with each other, I understood this book and its plot from a different perspective. This satire on the modern writer and social media is genius. I think if you are a writer you would appreciate it even more. Brilliant. It has much to say about writers, friendships, jealousies, and the publishing world It is best to read it and come to your own conclusions

Probably more like 4.5 ⭐️’s but I loved this dark, very readable novel. The audio was great.
