The novel is set around 1796 during the Napoleonic Wars, where in England it was common experience for press-gangs to kidnap sailors or other townsmen to fight for the King. Elizabeth Gaskell can tell a great story. This book has good characters, with flaws and foibles, with good hearts. It's a story about wrong choices and consequences and, finally, redemption.
Mrs. Gaskell described this story as the saddest story she's ever written and I agree that it is a sad one. Yet it's so well written, with such well developed characters and situations, that it was a joy to read.
