One of the best compliments I can give a novel is that it felt true, and this one certainly did. With its examination of the American justice system, its glimpses into a marriage that encounters an unfathomable barrier, and the questions it asks about relationships and fidelity, this novel rings true from start to finish. I can see why this is a popular book club choice - so much to discuss, so many possibly viewpoints. I found this to be both compassionate and unflinching in its portrayal ...more

[4.5 stars] An engrossing but difficult story that sheds light on the challenges of marriage under extreme, but not unique in the U.S., circumstances. It lost a little steam near the end, but there were sections that were so engrossing I lost myself completely in the story.

Recommended, if you can stomach the subject matter. It's not easy to read about people in such desperate situations. ...more
