I loved Less--I have not read any of Andrew Sean Greer's other books, and now I want to read them all. This lovely, funny, melancholy novel, a mere 261 pages in length, packs in so much detail so gracefully and easily taken in that this novel could be used in a writing course, to demonstrate the art of telling a good story in succinct, beautiful language. Meh. Overall, this book has some beautiful phrasing and some gorgeous moments, but it falls flat.
[4.5 stars] It is easy to see why "Less" is polarizing. It's too "inside baseball" about the publishing world and portrays the life of gay men as always successful and somewhat whimsical. But, wow, does Greer hit the nail on the head about aging, regret and second chances.
Even though some of the scenarios Arthur finds himself in are far-fetched (especially within a five month span of time), I was deeply affected by his journey of reflection.
