If the books Weetzie Bat by Francesca Lia Block and A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness had a baby, it would be this book.

“The truth does not change whether it is seen or unseen. A thing that is happening happens, whether you look at it or not. And yes, maybe it is easier not to look. Maybe it is easier to say because you do not see it, it is not happening.”

I initially picked up this book because I knew it was a Project LIT choice for the 2020 school year. I had seen several good reviews of this book but I was not prepared for how strange this book is. This is not your typical young adult novel. This story travels

Jam has loving parents and enjoys spending time with her best friend Redemption in Lucille, a peaceful city that is safe and free from monsters of any kind. Vigorous book club debate on this — it felt like the (omniscient 3rd person) narrator seemed to endorse the extreme simplification of angels and monsters, but our readers felt like the events of the story demonstrated the futility of such binary moral labels.
