Wow, this is the most overwritten, boring, confusing, nonsensical, plotless book I’ve read in a long time. I don’t understand the rating at all. This is supposed to be a story about two slaves who are shunned for being gay. We barely see them or hear about them. There are so many other narrators who play no part in the story. [4.5 stars] There are novels you read, and then there are novels you experience. “The Prophets” – a spectacular debut by Robert Jones, Jr. – pulls you in immediately, and by the end of this immersive drama it feels as though you’ve lost a piece of yourself but gained new perspective.
