Enthralling story that depicts post-Civil War Texas and chronicles a 400-mile journey to return a young girl to her family.

Johanna was six years old when she was taken captive by members of the Kiowa tribe. This book took me a while to get into. Then, it went on sale on Audible for $1.95, so I tried listening rather than reading and it was perfect. It took me a while to get into the story. Once I did, it was a heartwarming story of an old man and a little girl that was taken captive by Indians learning from and adapting to each other to survive. I did really miss quotation marks around dialogue though!

Slow moving. There is some movement at the very end, not a complete surprise, but the story might have been better if that had occurred earlier and the story could have reflected on it.

A short, interesting book. I never knew about traveling the west reading the news to others. I also never knew how greatly captives of Native Americans were affected, and maintained their Indian ways, even when living with the tribes for less than a year.
