Nathan Harris writes beautifully, with complicated characters and beautiful descriptions. This story has an epic quality to it. The lives of a few families in one fictional Georgia town encapsulate the entire realities that newly emancipated blacks and all Southern towns face. Goodreads gives an excellent summary of the plot which kept me engaged once I finally got to the middle of the book. I didn’t really care for any of the characters although the author did a masterful job of exploring their thoughts. I appreciated their growth. In the end, I was left with a sadness despite the hope offered. The overwhelming melancholy characters and the reality of the reconstruction era events left me feeling burdened but with the hope that the author might write a sequel in whic
