How easily we forget--we in the business of storytelling--that life was the point all along.
It took me forever to finally start this because I was worried it couldn't live up to A Gentleman in Moscow. And while it definitely didn't (in my mind), I did find the beauty I've come to expect from Towles' writing. I grew up in Nebraska and in a community through which the historic Lincoln Highway travels so was particularly excited to read Towles' latest novel. I anticipated rich descriptions that would transport me to the countryside of open skies and cornfields. 3.5 - this is a very good novel. It's main flaw is that I couldn't help but compare it to This Tender Land, and feel like William Kent Krueger did the thing better. Certainly they are not the same novel, but much of the structure is so similar that the comparison was inevitable. I will say that I enjoyed Towles' writing enough that I do now want to read his other books, so that's something.
