Louise Erdrich’s The Sentence was recommended by several members of The Virtual Silent Book Club, and I am very glad I followed it up!

It s written from the viewpoint of Tookie, the protagonist, who has rebuilt her life after being set up by a couple of friends. However, it also involves coming to terms with a past that Tookie has pretty much blocked out, and how she grows in the process.

Louise Erdrich is an author I’ve been embarrassed to have never read, so when buzz around “The Sentence” started to build in late-2021, it seemed like the perfect entry point for this lauded wordsmith.

The novel had a lot going for it: the setting (Minneapolis), the perspective (Indigenious), the timing (our first pandemic year and all that entailed), the plot (a potentially cursed book) and a likable curmudgeon of a main character (Tookie).

This tale wove together the COVID-19 pandemic, the life of indigenous Americans forced to assimilate, Magic’s realism of some cultures, the story of a convict and the fluidity of sexuality and relationships in the modern day.
