Outside of the exceptional audiobook narration by Lynnette R. Freeman, I found the sum of the parts of this “Cake’” decidedly dull instead of delectable.

Objectively speaking, this is not a terrible novel. Wilkerson writes with an accessible and breezy style that tingles all your senses. The short chapters help push the reader forward, and the mysteries are all wrapped up in the end. In other words, it’s the perfect crowd pleaser.

It also felt mediocre, suffering from a case of being overcooked

The oceans are a challenge, Mr. Mitch thinks. And what about a person's life? How do you make a map of that? The borders people draw between themselves. The scars left along the ground of one's heart. What will Byron have to say about that, once he and his sister have heard their mother's message?

The multiple characters and shifting timelines got confusing, but overall, I enjoyed this story about the depths of a mother's love.

I love books that make me search for recipes and learn more about cultures through food…because…food! This debut is so much more than cake though. It’s the story about the life of a girl from the islands escaping to follow her own heart and dreams.

Byron and Benny have lost their mother that have become estranged. Their mother left behind a series of recordings confessing the secrets of her past. @charmspen1 does a beautiful job weaving together the past and the present, slowly revealing her life

Black Cake is a story of multiple generations on multiple continents each struggling with personal challenges. Sometimes the challenges are common to their race or gender, sometimes they are the result of grievances against them personally. An engrossing tale, well written. Performance by narrator was impressive. She has an incredible availing for voices and accents. At times her choice of emphasis was different than how I would have said something.
