Set in Boston in the summer 1974 on the verge of a district judge desegregation order that tried to bus white kids from South Boston to an all black high school within the city limits, and would bus some of the black children from that school to the South Boston high school. Bit of a slow start, but, once it gets going, it hits all the right notes. The book just feels raw and real. Are any of the characters extremely likable? No, not even close, but they feel like real people trying to navigate extreme loss. Lehane understands the characters he created, and it does really show throughout the book.
