Toll-toll-toll; and a pause; toll-toll-toll; and a pause; toll-toll-toll; the nine tailors, or teller-strokes, that mark the passing of a man. The year is dead; toll him out with twelve strokes more, one for every passing month. Then silence. Then, from the faint, sweet tubular chimes of the clock overhead, the four quarters and the twelve strokes of midnight. The ringers grasped their ropes. ‘Go!’

Dorothy Sayers is a favourite author of mine and I think this may be one of her best. I am constantly amazed about Sayers' areas of interest. When I first picked up this book, my idea of a tailor was someone who sewed and altered clothing (perhaps because that was how my great-grandmother supported herself after she was widowed). The church bell lore surprised me in a very pleasant way. It was fascinating to get educated in this obscure field of study.

Dorothy L Sayers' dramatisation with Ian Carmichael. Another interesting BBC dramatization.

I went into 'The Nine Tailors' expecting a well-written golden-age mystery. I was curious to see Peter Wimsey without Harriet Vane as a balance. I wasn't expecting anything more than some colourful scenery, a bit of wit and an engaging puzzle. I got all those things but they weren't really what the book was about.
'The Nine Tailors' is a story lacquered with lots of layers of imagery and inquiry but, at its heart, I think it's about Sayers' love of the Fens and its people and her understanding, ...more

This was always one of my favorite Wimseys. I was surprised (and a bit alarmed) to realize how much I had forgotten in the many years since I read it. It took me a disconcertingly long time to remember the crucial point, even though I recalled the final scenes. I reread it for the Dead Writers Society, and I am very glad I did.

Overall, a well-plotted, satisfying mystery with engaging details of English village/church life. Details about “ringing the changes” were confusing to me, but I skimmed through those bits.
I found the characters charming and believable, from the befuddled rector and his wife, to Lord Peter’s man, Bunter. Lord Peter himself is always a delight: his detective success depends largely on his ability to elicit information through ostensibly social conversations. My reading of this novel was enhanced by going back and forth between the print edition (for the spellings, especially of the names) and the audio (for the accents and pronunciations), as well as watching a few YouTube videos on change ringing. This is a complex mystery that unfolds slowly, with a cast of thousands (or at least dozens) and so many nuanced motivations. I enjoyed the story even though I'm not a fan of bells rung this way.
