So, this one was a bit underwhelming, to be perfectly honest. I wanted to like it, with it's aura of louche 1930's glamour. Unfortunately, I basically disliked all of the characters except for Nick & Nora. On second thought, I disliked Nick, too.
I was especially uncomfortable with Dorry, who was depicted as a hormonally-driven drunken teenager, and Nick's reaction to her tight little body made me more than a little uncomfortable (actually, I'm not sure if she was a teenager). Her brother, Gilbe ...more

I was happy to read the comments from those that did this buddy read. Other than that, if this is an example of Classic Noir, I don't think I'm going to be a fan. I didn't like anyone. The writing at times was hard to understand since it was written in another time and place. A couple of things I had to go and look up and realized it would have been better for me to just watch an old black and white movie instead.

Once an investigator ... always an investigator. Nick thought he had left all that investigation stuff behind him but it keeps chasing him down and insisting he gets involved, sometimes at the wrong end of a gun.
Oh man they put away a lot of booze. I remember this from the film (and now I want to watch it again) This book is well-served by the film and in fact the snappy dialogue reads like it should be a film script.

I am fascinated with the Thin Man movie series, which starred William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles. I had never read the book by Dashiell Hammett, so this was a treat. Hammett presents a light and fun-loving mystery, which presents 90% of the story through dialogue. Hammett does not write lengthy descriptions, but presents everything through his dialogue. The story is told from Nick's voice. After reading the book, I am anxious to see the movie again.

Um, I´m thinking my liver is pickled after reading this book. They all drank so much. If they took out every mention of getting a drink they wouldn´t have enough pages left to make a book.
Anyway, I found this book kinda dull, that family was so crazy and I figured out what was up with the ¨thin man¨ too early. blah. I need a drink.
