This was a delightful book, right up in my favorites next to "the good earth" and "things fall apart". Often books set in early 1900's show the european and american perspective. Reading this I realized how little I knew about Korea, and Japan's outlook during the war. The stories center around family, and different ways love manifests, and are quite touching. Highly recommend.

Historical fiction about Zainichi Koreans --Koreans who live in Japan. Since I’m currently living is South Korea, I love this book. It has richly woven characters, volumes upon volumes of social history, war history, all told through generations of one family. The story spreads a tale of beauty, love & loss, resilience and redemption through context during a dramatic point in real life world events.
