I enjoyed reading Ms Alvarez's version of the lives of the Mirabel sisters of the Dominican Republic. They challenged the rule of the dictator, Trujillo, and worked to try to overthrow his corrupt government. Three of the four sisters were murdered in an ambush by Trujillo. International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is recognized each year on November 25, which was the date these women were murdered by their government in 1960.
