The middle got a little preachy, but the writing is gorgeous, the structure is inventive and thoroughly developed, and it made me see the world a little differently. "Like" feels like the wrong word. I respected this book. ...more

Just finished and I have that “book afterglow” feeling that always feels brand-new and introspective and aware and incredible.

Too many things to say about why I loved this book, and I don’t have the literary capacity to explain.

I will say that if you have a chance to read this book outdoors, do so. I can only speak for myself but reading this while sitting in the woods marked a sublime experience that I think made me.... just....
better.

The overarching message of this book is that humans are doing themselves in with the inexorable march toward “civilization”, progress and more money. Article in today’s Sun mention a new development of hundreds of homes taking away water and wilderness. And the march is endless, worldwide, backed by law and politics.

I really enjoyed the stories in the first part of this book. To use an illustration from the book, the first stories were like the Hoel Chestnut, slowly developed over time with depth, interesting, worth investing in. The middle and end of the book were more like a hybrid poplar, too fast, boring, space filler. The stories were so choppy that they didn't even seem like the same characters I had read about in the beginning of the book. I kept wanting everything to tie together and it never did so ...more

I found this book very hard to rate. While reading it my mind would go from thinking it corny then to brilliant; back and forth constantly. It was a page turner
