“Everyone is a blank canvas, waiting to be filled with the colour of discovery.”
“Technically, I’m a murderer, but I like to think that’s one of my better qualities.” - JUST LOOK AT THE BANTER. 4.5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This took waaaaaaay to long for me to get into. For such a relatively short book, this dragged. I was so ready for this to be amazing, I needed this to live up to the hype and general quality of ya fantasy but it just fell flat for me. I didn’t care about any of the characters for a solid 60% of the book and only found the last 10% to be passable.
Soz to be such a negative nelly, I was so hoping to love this but it just missed the mark for me :/

The thing about this book is that I feel nothing. This was one of those meh reads where you want to know what happens and you remember most of the characters but you wouldn't care to think about it again. Now sure, the plot is engaging and the characters were interesting but I didn’t see anything executed in this book that was particularly spectacular or more than mediocre.
I would say that this book is great for a mindless read where you get some romance and you get some pirate action, but if y ...more

This was a dark and seductive retelling of The Little Mermaid. I was immersed in the lush imagery of priates, mermaids, and sirens - with a dark twist and narrated by two morally conflicted characters. I particularly enjoyed how the book fleshed out the nuances of mermaids and sirens. That this busted the traditional fairytale-glossing of both the original & Disney adaption of The Little Mermaid. To Kill a Kingdom left me a somewhat underwhelmed. It took me quite a while to get into the story, but near the second half of the book I started to become more invested.
I loved the world building and the character development. It was fleshed out enough to keep me reading. The banter between characters and few twists were enjoyable.
However, the plot felt a bit confusing and slow at times and found I few inconsistencies in references or descriptions. At times, I even had to reread ...more

A bit YA fantasy by numbers, sticking close to the tropes and occasionally characters acting in ways that only make sense if you know that this is the point in the plot that this sort of thing usually happens. Side characters were fun, but could feel a tiny bit like banter-wallpaper. That said, I found it an enjoyable easy read with enough twists on the usual Little Mermaid as a siren retelling that made it more interesting. Add in some good snarky narration from Lira (Elian could be a little to

Review is now up on my blog. I loved the first 25-30% but then, knowing there was going to be another forced romance and not really believing some things, I had to put it down :/
