What Members Thought

8 days and many phone breaks and I HAVE FINALLY FINISHED THIS.

I feel like I deserve an award for finishing this. As you can see in my four-star rating, I enjoyed this book but it really has similar properties to a brick. Large, heavy, and slightly exhausting to hold for hours on end. I naively thought that this would take 4-5 days to read but it actually took 8 days. So it did feel like a miny reading slump in of itself, but I think it was worth it.

A deeply complex and unputdownable high fantasy. 5/5

Audible Narration: I like to think I’m pretty honest & quick to realize when a narration interpretation doesn’t work for me... but for this book I was 20 hours in and I was like –this is a better kindle read, isn’t it?!
Part of it was the narrator, Liyah Summers, had to do SCORES of voices and some of them she had to really dig for and it took me completely out of the listening mood. Like it took the vibe from epic drama to cheesy campfire story.
Part of it speaks to Samantha Shannon’s ability to ...more

DNF @ 71%
DNFing a book has never been a easy decision for me, but after 2 attempts, I call it quits for Priory of the Orange Tree .
This book started off on a positive note and I was intrigued by the world in addition to enjoying High Fantasy and dragons. However, I had the impression that this book had no business being 800 pages and it was only this long to "rival" big Fantasy authors such as Brandon Sanderson, Robert Jordan, etc. Because there were so many characters, I had difficulty to latch ...more

Finally finished this massive beast of a book
This was so satisfying to read. I've been reading a lot of high fantasy lately, and Priory scratches so many itches I crave in the genre. I adored how Shannon weaved together St. George & the Dragon and the tale of Hohodemi so tastefully, shaping such an intricate world built around their figureheads. Some of the plot beats felt typical and expected esp. for the genre, but with the amount of twist and turns in the rest of the story, they nev ...more
