I am really awed by Sarah Maas’s ability to write a short story that has almost everything I want in a book. You know, the usual unique adventure, discovery, action and all that; it’s a little short on the love story, but I totally feel the little sparks of romance that makes me want more.

For me this was one of those books that was so inspirational and fun to read that it lead me into a writing frenzy upon finishing it. I'm not much of a writer and very few books can ignite that writing spark for me, but this was one of them! (Minor spoilers ahead.)

The characters in this book are so fantastic. I love the friendship that blooms between Calaena and Ansel and totally wish that I could have such a cool friend like that. Speaking of which, Ansel's wolf armor is so amazing! If I were ever sucked into a fantasy novel I would totally want that to be my battle armor. Furthermore, Ansel's story was a very intriguing one. She was just as much fun to read about as Celaena!

What I loved most about this novella was the world-building and the history. The world in which S.J. Maas has created is one that I just love getting sucked into. I could practically feel the heat of the desert and could visualize the beauty of it just perfectly. Her fantasy world feels so real and well-fleshed out that I am always so sad to have to leave it. I loved learning about the spidersilk and the ultimate price one must pay in order to obtain some of it. The Asterion horses were absolutely amazing and the Ironteeth witches sounded very intimidating but awesome at the same time!

The flashbacks that Calaena kept having of the night she returned to Arobynn kept me at the edge of my seat. And let me just say, Arobynn is and has always been one of my favorite characters. I know that some of the things that he does to Calaena is unforgivable, but the way S.J. Maas describes him makes him out to be such an intriguing character. I think he is absolutely perfect as the King of the Assassins and I can't wait to read more about him in the future novellas! Also....Sam! I really love him. I think that relationships that start off with the two hating each other but eventually developing soft feelings for one another are my favorite. I'm so eager to read the next novella and find out if Sam is okay!

I would definitely recommend this novella to any lover of fantasy, great world-building or kick-butt heroines. I'm so excited for what's to come! ...more

I find the main character more engaging and interesting from reading the first two novellas. Despite her occupation as an assassin, I find her relate-able.
