I first read this book somewhere in 2020 (I don’t really remember when, that whole year is a blur to me), and I remember thinking that there was nothing special about this book. I just wasn’t interested. And because of that I never finished the series.

I haven't been active much lately, and it sucks because I really enjoy this community.
Because of school o probably won't be active much but I will keep updating the books that I'm currently reading.

I really like this book TBH I wasn't expecting it to like it as much as I did bc of the many critical reviews that I have seen.
Overall, I really like the Plot.
the one thing that bothers me a lot is that Alina calls herself ugly constantly when she is actually beautiful.

Loved the writing style. The audiobook is also amazing! I listened to it while reading the test and it was a wonderful experience. I liked Alina as a protagonist. She is a relatable character and acts to her age unlike some of the other YA characters and I hope this is maitained even as her character developes in the series. She is pretty humorous and made me crack up several times in the story. I didn't like Mal that much(if not hate him) and absolutely hated his relationship with Alina in the ...more

I have so many thoughts about this book. I had such low expectations for some reason and I actually really enjoyed it. I read the six of crows dulogy first and this helped me understand the world so much better! I wish I had read this series or at leas this book first, I think I’d have enjoyed six of crows even more!

I really loved the whole magic system, it was so interesting and the relationships between all of the characters made so much sense and fit so seamlessly together. I completely understood Alina’s momentary infatuation with the darkling. Powerful, strong, dark haired men are really hot. She just wanted to feel wanted and accepted for once. Besides, she was upset and feeling rejected by Mal because she thought that he was ignoring the letters she sent. I also really love Mal and Alina. I can 100% see why she loves him and I was sad that he didn’t have that much screen time, but she had basically developed her personality around Mal in the beginning. She was always looking for Mal. She always wanted to talk to Mal. I think the distance did wonders for both of them. It helped him realise he loved her and it allowed her to become her own person and start to accept herself.

The darkling. A lot to say about him. I will never ship him with Alina. Never. However, I admire him as a villain. He’s so wonderfully written. He is a master manipulator who has had centuries to perfect the art of showing people what they want to see and giving them what they think they wants. It seems as though he was even able to reach out of this fantasy world and manipulate many readers too. There is something so alluring and intoxicating about his character. I think it clearly shows how difficult it is for people to leave toxic relationships and situations when the person you should be running away from is offering you everything you believe you need. The bonus chapter from Genya’s POV really highlighted how she was not entirely responsible for her actions. She has been manipulated so thoroughly by the darkling. The darkling is the one who put her in a horrible situation and by swearing to help her get out of it and get revenge on her abusers, he manipulated her into becoming a spy for him. By promising her a place in a world she long dreamed of being in.

The plot was so gripping. So many people had told me it wasn’t as gripping as Six of Crows and it’s been a while since I read SOC but alright, yeah, there’s more action in SOC. However, I found that it was occasionally a bit too fast pace and I got lost. This book was so well paced and was a wonderful way to introduce me to Ravka and reintroduce me to the grishaverse. I loved getting to see more of the grisha because I didn’t really understand them in six of crows. I am so excited to re-read it with this new understanding.

I am a bit nervous about reading Siege and Storm only because I’ve heard it’s not as gripping as the first book and I’m worried I won’t be able to finish it. ...more

i really liked it and i absolutely love alina. i'm definitely continuing this and i'm really excited for the next book.
the pace was really fast and mal is boring lol.
just wished the magical aspects of the world would have been described more. like for example how other people's magic works as well
