In 2012, Malala Yousafzai, a 14-year-old Pakistani girl, was shot by the Taliban on her way to school. She and her father advocated for education for all, and when the assailants entered the bus, they asked, "Who is Malala?" She innocently answered, "I am Malala," and was shot.
The early part of the book gives details of her homeland--the valley of Swat, history of Pakistan, and her family's story before detailing the attack, her recovery, and the quest for educational equality that followed.
