I’ll admit, because of the hype around this, I did have some high expectations. So I was being picky. I kind of wasn’t feeling the plotline…but nevertheless this book had some great character depiction and development.
Each character was so unique and relatable. You just can’t help but love them.

I read this book last month, so apologies if I come across a bit rusty in parts. I'm only getting around to reviewing it now. I came across this book thanks to BookTube and decided to give it a read.

Loved:
- The characters (especially Julian, he was great. I liked meeting Yadriel, his Dad, his Tio, his Abuela, Martiza and her family, the dogs, Julian's friends etc).
- The setting (a cemetery in East L.A)
- The time of year (coming up to Día De Los Muertos)
- The culture (I loved how the aut 3.75 *

I read this book last month, so apologies if I come across a bit rusty in parts. I'm only getting around to reviewing it now. I came across this book thanks to BookTube and decided to give it a read.

Loved:
- The characters (especially Julian, he was great. I liked meeting Yadriel, his Dad, his Tio, his Abuela, Martiza and her family, the dogs, Julian's friends etc).
- The setting (a cemetery in East L.A)
- The time of year (coming up to Día De Los Muertos)
- The culture (I loved how the author merged different aspects of Latinx culture with Día De Los Muertos and made it work)
- The chemistry between the characters (especially Yadriel and Julian and I also like how Julian resolved things with his brother, Rio).

Wasn't so in love with:
- The start of act three (it started off very strong, the middle dragged out a bit, which was okay, since we were building up to the climax, which I thought was a bit underwhelming. Yadriel should have at least used his portaje to cut the amulet off to show how he had grown as a person, how he could use his portaje, rather than just ripping it off his Tio with his bare hands).
- The pacing (it was set over three-four days and everything happened pretty fast. I think that if it had of happened over a week-two weeks, the pacing would have been better and I would have been less thrown off, but again, I understand it's a story. But three-four days to fall in love doesn't seem like a lot. Some of the scenes are a bit slow, some of them a bit fast).

Despite this, I liked the wholesome ending and how Yadriel became accepted by the brujx, found love with Julian and gained his magic. And got to the officially recognised at the Aquelarre as brujo.

All in all, a decent debut. I really enjoyed the world building, the character development and the chemistry between the characters. It was a wholesome, slightly humourous read, but the final act let me down, along with some of the pacing- timeline.

I'm not expecting a debut book to be perfect, but this was pretty good for what it was. Am looking forward to reading more from Aiden Thomas in the future. ...more
