What Members Thought

In a word, Where the Crawdads Sing is BEAUTIFUL, sad but beautiful.
Kya Clark is abandoned in a marsh shack by her family first then by young men whom she thought loved and cared for her.
The detailed, ornate language used to describe the marshlands of North Carolina was enchanting. I could not only see the flora and fauna but hear, smell, feel, and even taste Kya’s world.
In many ways, the trial scenes reminded me of To Kill a Mockingbird. In fact, I was often making connections to Mockingbird ...more

Overall Rating : B
Waited 3 month for this book at my library, read it in three days and all I can say is "meh".
Definitely not the kind of book I usually read and that's probably why it didn't strike a cord with me as it has other people. Don't see how this book has been so popular.

Dubbed the “Marsh Girl,” Kya has always been an outsider in her own town. This didn’t bother her much, until she’s blamed for murder.
Although the backstory is a bit much, I feel like this aspect didn’t have much of an effect on me. Besides the beginning, the pacing was fine and fitting for the story. This book had a lot of imagery, which really helped with this particular story. Besides the obvious murder mystery, this also explored themes such as coming-of-age, loss, independence, and love. This book was different than I expected. I thought it would be a mystery. The mystery is only a small part of the story. I enjoyed the first part which is about Kya who has to fend for herself when she is still a little kid. It was interesting to read about her growing up. I found the second part less interesting and even boring. The writing was good. Overall I thought this was a nice read.

Much of this book is beautifully written, full of insightful observations of nature and man's interactions with nature. The author really draws the reader into the marshy setting of her story. However, I found the relationships of Kya, Tate and Chase less absorbing. I found they simply lacked credibility. However, as you might expect from her background, Delia Owens' strength lies in the way she can bring the natural world to life in the pages of a book. And she certainly does that to good effec
