This is such a cute, intense YA that had me on the edge of my seat. I went into this book with middle of the road expectations, but I was wrong to shoot low because this book soared over my expectations.

Xingyin was a likeable character with sometimes an annoying flair of dramatics that made me roll my eyes. I think her characterisation and growth was well done fully formed. She still felt like a 16 year in many parts even though she was supposed to be in her 20s but I found her to be appropriately hollowed out by her victory at the end. Her introspection was poignant and reflective of her journey and I am intrigued how the more mature, world-weary young woman will navigate her choices in the future in the second and last book in the series.

I understand what the love triangle would put people off this book but I find it obvious who Xingyin will end up with. I have read many NA Fantasy books by now so my expectations of a cute, fluffy wholesome love story between the two main characters was being challenged against my favourite trope in New Adult fantasy's - the tortured, serious, aloof Demon Prince. I knew who would win out in this book but my heart wants what my heart wants, a Demon Prince (sorry jesus).

Would I recommend this book?
Yes.
I recommend it for people who like Six Crimson Cranes and Daughter of Sparta.

Yes.

Main character being the worst thinkable standard YA heroine was a thing that never went over well with me. She was the best of everything. She didn't make mistakes. Two men wanted her because we had to get love triangle. Characters overall were quite flat, there was only one of her teachers (even though she was so good that I don't know if she really needed a teacher) who was interesting.

I loved the atmosphere, the world was interesting and beautiful!

I was really excited for this one but it fell a little short for me. There was little development between the main character and those she would be close to throughout the book, so I didn't really have any emotional ties to anyone.

The story did get more exciting towards the end, which helped make up for the lack of development, but I'm not really sure if I was invested enough to pick up the sequel when it comes. ...more
