daughter of a rancher in 1840s mexico, nena’s home has long been threatened by the monsters from the north, but now it seems like a more literal monster is nearby…something that attacked nena herself nine years ago, but now seems to be back for more.

i’m immediately sold on a book as soon as i hear it has vampires, but learning this discussed colonialism, too? oh, sign me up. this book delivered on both accounts, especially when blending the two together.

Not as vampire-y as I might have hoped, but interesting! The creatures that Cañas has created are quite fascinating.
I agree with other reviewers - definitely more historical romance with spooky elements than horror, really. Personally, I preferred The Hacienda, but I really think I've found a new auto-read author! ...more
