Lisa Randall is one of my favorite scientists. Her research is amazing. I highly recommend this book as well as watching her lectures online. The lectures (some 5 hours in length) help solidify the information in this book. I can't wait to see where this research leads. I have always been excited to learn about dimensions. I hope I live long enough to see the how the work of Randall and others affects our understanding or branes and the forces attached to them. ...more

I know I won't be able to truly understand quantum mechanics and particle physics until I sit down and learn the math somehow...but I thought Lisa Randall did an amazing job trying. I caught glimpses of our invisible world of virtual particles, gluons, squarks, 5th dimensions and branes.

My world has been rocked. Nuff said.

Not the easiest read, but entertaining and you can get an overview of some of the new ideas in cosmology, especially Randall's own. ...more

A theoretical physics book about the possibility of extra dimensions, written for the lay person. Randall does a good job of laying down the foundations of relativity, particle physics and string theory, as well as her research related to possible extra dimensions, without getting bogged down in heavy math. I found it interesting, and it gave me a better sense of why everyone is so anxiously awaiting results from the LHC.

The book is somewhat similar to Kaku's "Hyperspace" but is a bit more technical and comprehensive and includes more recent theoretical developments.
The first part of the book provides a good (simplified) review of Standard Model physics. The remaining majority of the book covers more recent theoretical developments, including supersymmetry, string theory, branes, multiverses, other extra-dimensional theories, etc.
