Despite the title this is really a book about conserving the life in our oceans. The author presents example after example of how various forms of sea life reproduces--yet there is an underlying message of how humans get in the way of this reproduction and have caused the crash of many species. Not all is doom and gloom, the author gives examples of where with simple changes we have brought species back and can catch them in a responsible manner.

Despite the occasional 'too clever by half' passages, this book was a delight and an education. I had no idea there was such reproductive complexity at work in other species and, apparently, possibly at its greatest diversity in the oceans. I also had no notion that we, the smart and dangerous ape, are disrupting the lives of ocean-dwellers to the extent that we are. We need to stop mucking about in those great big ponds before the effect of some of our actions are irreversible.

After reading so many books about animal behavior that focused on the outdated ideology of evolutionary psych (e.g. good genes, sexy sons, and the like), it was extremely refreshing to read this author. She provided lots of animal behavior studies, general information about sea life, and tons of interesting information about animal sex in the sea. Interestingly, she related all of that to sustainability, climate change, and other current important issues.
