'Timefulness' by Marcia Bjornerud is an excellent general review of how the work of geologist specialists of all kinds and from the observations of proto-scientists in earlier centuries to now, geologists have been able to determine the age of the Earth and its history. The book describes the history of the original formation of the Earth and its various atmospheric gas changes (well, at least from the eras after the Earth's first birthday of a few billion years old) to current times. Astronomers and Geologists both embrace very long time periods. The author uses her knowledge of geology to show us how time in the end wins. Some will be uncomfortable with what history shows us. The earth has been hot in the past and our current collision course with climate change certainly does not look encouraging. This is a quick read.

Some parts of this book were super interesting, I learned quite a few things about geology and the timeline of the Earth that I really enjoyed. Much of the other science was rehash for me and kind of slow and boring. In general I did like her writing style and story crafting. My biggest issue with the book was that I don't think that the author accomplished her goal of showing how thinking like a geologist can really influence dealing with climate change. ...more
