Why are there so few books about chemistry written for the lay reader?

What Members Thought

This book is quite an entertaining read. It is packed with interesting anecdotes about scientists who explored the outer fringes of the periodic table. I even learned a little bit of chemistry. The book is organized in an intelligent manner--each chapter is devoted to some theme, with a small group of elements that fit into that theme in some way. Sometimes the author strays from the exploration of elements, but he always seems to relate to the chapter's theme.

All of us remember the periodic table from our high school science classes, but have you ever thought about how it came to be and all the history that surrounds those elements? Sam Kean seems to have spent a good deal of time researching exactly that and has brought us a compelling read about all the amazing stories that surround the periodic table of elements.
The stories include the hunt for new elements, the private lives of the scientists involved, the stupid things some of them did that lead

A B in high school chemistry indicated that a science career was not for me, but I still enjoy and appreciate the intriguing world of science, especially in story form and simplified explanation of phenomena. The Disappearing Spoon fit my demands almost perfectly, except in the few instances when the science got too dense for me.

Three plus.
Some fun, interesting stories about the development of the periodic table and the people behind it. Some informational science, but just a bit over my head once we get to the sub-atomic level.
I wondered, while reading it, who he thought his audience is. It's a bit too focused on the fun stories to interest serious science geeks, but the science is a bit too in-depth to appeal to the light reader. I'm guessing it probably appeals primarily to those interested in the history of science ...more

This was a fascinating blend of chemistry, biography, and history. This is one of the few books I will probably have to reread and take notes - it has too much information to rely on my memory. Plus, the footnotes are filled with other resources and anecdotes. Highly recommended for anyone interested in science.
